identity of embodiment –
strength, decrease and recreation
A look at the development of Japanese understanding of design opens up many questions. Both very Japanese: Tea ceremonies and Tamagotchi.
Cultural and political conditions of a society are mirrored by the output of their designers. This mirroring, on the one hand, is constantly changing, on the other hand, it keeps its peculiarity which makes it different from other cultures.
Why are there two concepts of design in Japan that are completely different from each other? The theoretical part of my thesis is trying to answer this question. In the practical part, an object is to emerge which should be based on the answer to this question. Using the notion of “Gestaltungsidentität” (transl. as “identity of embodiment”) the Japanese history of design can be left aside.
How does this notion translate into an object?
