Papillon –
a smart folding bag out of paper
Papillon is a bag the land of Hessen will be giving to its international exchange students on their arrival.
Starting with a pre-folded sheet, the student will fold the bag himself in only four very easy steps. The instructions, some city-map and a list of interesting links are printed to the inside of the bag.
The materials used – rubberised paper, flexible paper made of synthetic fibres and simple brown mixed pulp board create an interesting tension somehwere between high-quality product and convenient mass-product. These materials make the bag haptically enjoyable, handy as well as helpful, but what’s more: its production costs are low.
The design of this bag is quite sophisitcated and very functional. Keeping the final assembly so simple, the usual size of packaging for empty bags can be minimized. The initial sheet’s flat shape guarantees good stacking characteristics.
