swinging chair –
a rocking sinus curve

The concept of this rocking chair which is easily set in motion is the result of a by-product in the research and development of the suspension of the ICE.

Within the scope of a joint study project between the Department for Design of the Hochschule Darmstadt and the Department for Engineering of the Technische Universität Darmstadt, various designs for rocking chairs evolved which had to follow certain concepts of engineering.

This new concept makes the rocker hang on four spring-loaded controls made of fibre glass that make it swing, rather than it being set up on some traditional vats.

To get this concept ready for marketing, it is crucial from a customer’s point of view to revise all previous designs, concept-wise as well as aesthetically. The aim of this revision was to develop a “LoungeChair” which had to fit in with the classic ambience of, say, the lobby of a hotel.
